How To Train Good Homework Habits: A Professional Point Of View

Take my advice. Do your homework. But, you may be one of those kids struggling to come to grips with sitting your rear end in your chair at night. A few helpful hints here may help you on your way to graduation day.

Take time out

The first, and best, piece of advice I can give you right now is that you need to relax. By that, I do not mean spend hours on your feet at the mall, or slouch in front of the TV all afternoon. Your brain needs fresh air, plenty of it. Go for a walk in the park.

A culture of discipline

The successful completion of homework assignments requires character and discipline. Cultivating discipline is not easy but begins with small, incremental steps. Just one half hour sitting solidly at your desk will be a great start. The next week, try sitting for an hour.

Learn the art of patience. And if you find that you haven’t been able to complete your homework by bedtime, don’t panic. But, with patience you will learn to focus and work a little quicker, still at your own pace, mind you.

Time management

Never leave off doing homework until the last moment. Set aside one or two hours just for your schoolwork, say just after dinner. You could even jumpstart your body clock and work for an hour before school in the morning. This is when the brain is at its brightest. And routine does work wonders for the mind.

Reading habits

Most students struggle with their homework because they cannot read well. Cultivating good reading habits can be mastered as well. Visit your local library, take out a few books and read beyond what your teacher has assigned you. Do not worry if you can only manage a few pages at a time. Your reading will improve, but only if you do this daily.

There’s no such thing as a stupid question

It is no use to anyone, especially yourself, if you just give up, unable to complete your assignment because you cannot find the right answer. That is what the teacher is there for. Note down your problem and ask her the next day.

Always remember that practice makes perfect. The main thing here is that you don’t give up. You will thank me afterwards.
